From the Song to the Stage
What happens when you take a blues song and really make it your own?
In this workshop, we will go beyond simply singing the notes. We will explore what makes a blues performance feel alive – the voice, the groove, the phrasing, the sound, the attitude and, above all, the story behind the song.
We will work with some of the essential tools of blues singing: blue notes, bends, slides, ornamentation, dynamics, vocal colour, cry, grit, rhythm, syncopation, call and response, and the use of space. But the real challenge will be learning how to use these tools musically and intentionally.
We will also spend more time working directly with songs: exploring different ways of approaching a melody, shaping phrases, making interpretive choices, developing your own version and discovering what works best for your voice.
And because a great song deserves to be performed, we will prepare some performance pieces, working on stage presence, communication, confidence and the practical details that can transform a good vocal into a convincing performance.
Along the way, we will listen to some of the great blues voices, take inspiration from their unique approaches, experiment, take some risks and, of course, have plenty of time to sing.
